Sensaria Green

After Our Daily Green posted some warnings regarding the cosmetics and personal care products we use, several of our readers and friends have contacted Our Daily Green to review different brands of skin care products they either sell or use.

We tend to be skeptical first and do a lot of research before putting anything in or on our skin. When bombarded with chemicals just by breathing, any other item we use by choice will be well researched. Technically, we do not choose the air we breathe or the soil our food grows in. We asked a lot of questions before writing this review to make sure Our Daily Green's integrity was intact by reviewing this product line.

A favorite resource for ingredient checking is the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep  page which is a cosmetic safety database. The mission of the Environmental Working Group (EWG) is to use the power of public information to protect public health and the environment. EWG is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. They rank ingredients on a simple scale of 0-10 based on how risky different ingredients are. When we were unable to find an ingredient on EWG, our next resource was CosmeticsInfo.org, a site dedicated to consumer safety in personal products, sponsored by the Personal Care Products Council. While they are not the preferred information source, they do compile valuable data from different research agencies. Just be cognizant that they may have a vested interest beyond consumer safety.

Without further ado, we received our samples from Sensaria and started to do our research. Our first product was the Balancing Skin Cleanser. While the cleanser contains a number of natural botanicals, following water, the next six ingredients had some rather ominous-sounding chemical names. We looked up each ingredient and the possible risks associated with them and concluded the risks are minimal. Remember that many of the risks associated with such ingredients are either by ingestion or submersion. In other words, if you're not eating or swimming in the product, washing your face or moisturizing your skin is an extremely negligible risk. Again, EWG uses a 0-10 risk scale, with 10 being the riskiest ingredients.
Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate : 3 moderate risk due to possible contamination from other ingredients that are less safe
Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate : 1 coconut based surfactant helps the cleanser foam
Cocamidopropyl Betaine: 5 due to some allergic reactions
PEG-120 Methyl Glucose: 4 restricted to use in cosmetics only
*Gluconalactone: no warnings from EWG, natural antioxidant
Sodium Benzoate: 2 for mild risk at very high doses

Sensaria originally was a line of personal care products sold under the brand Natural Body Care, distributed through Whole Foods, among other retailers. The now owner of the company tried to replace his shampoo, a flagship of the Sensaria product line and found the company was struggling. He acquired the company and changed the name to Sensaria in 2005. For more information on the product line, please visit their website.

We liked the skin care products we tested and are pleased to give them an Our Daily Green thumbs up for safety.

In compliance with FTC regulations, we disclose that we received a few trial sized samples of Sensaria products. Sensaria is a personal care line my friend sells. If you check out the company and make a purchase, she will earn a commission. Other than that, Our Daily Green receives no compensation for this review, beyond helping a friend. She has graciously extended a 20% off discount to any reader who mentions Our Daily Green when they order!
